I'm wondering if there is a solution to use connectable tracks docked to a 'square/plaza' object automatically.
At the moment I use shapes. First, I convert them to a path. Second, I convert them to a connectable track. That does work but it is awkward to do.
Does anybody know a more elegant solution?

There's isn't really a more direct way to do this than the method you have discovered. You could group the tracks with the square and cut/paste or duplicate it whenever you needed a similar one, then ungroup to allow the track elements to be connected into the network.
