Hi Indy,

No, this isn't currently supported. The Pro version will have georeferencing which would support this.

I can understand about the single letters. Its always a challenge between flexibility and intuitiveness. Even the using command functions I find are ok. I use CMD-J all the time to Join. One thing I did was define CMD-L to toggle the clip to map boundary by using System preferences because that was in the drop down menus, but all of the tool bar options are not. Things like - and + can also bring confusion since on my keyboard + is a shifted key, but - is not, so do you tell people to use CMD-+ or CMD-Shift-+

I am sure what ever you come up with will be fine, as you all of the other key variants. I find its easy to try the brain if you are repetitive. I have trained my self to know (space) is pointer and (y) is symbol stamp (z) is zoom and CMD-j is Join.

Thanks for the response and consideration.

One problem we face is using logical letters, bearing in mind they have to be unique, and just a single letter. Once the obvious ones are assigned, r for 'rectangle' and b for 'bezier' and so on, it doesn't leave very many. So I propose the following, which really is just those that remain unassigned:

Add Point: + (or in fact =)
Remove Point: -
Freehand Track: j
Polygonal Track: h
Cut Path: u

Freehand path already uses f

There's no real logic to using h and j for the two tracks, except that we use k for the bezier tracK and at least that puts h, j, and k in a cluster.

Zoom out is duplicated with option-click (Zoom In) so is a little redundant - in fact that tool is likely to get replaced at some point by something more useful. If you have a scroll-wheel mouse, option-scroll-wheel will freely zoom the view which personally I find a very good way to work.

Is it possible to take one of the "blank" maps in Ortelius and add and position city tags based on Lat-Long Coordinates? Usage: If I want to create a Europe Map, where only cities are displayed we have branch offices at

e.g.
Tag (City): London
Latitude: 51,32 N

Sorry if this is a duplicate post, but it seems as if my first did not show.

A couple of keyboard shortcuts that would be handy:

Zoom Out - (There is currently Option-CMD-Minus, but that is hard to do one handed, and the OS Universal Access options keep stealing the Option-CMD-Minus)

Freehand Path
Remove Point from Path
Add Point to Path
Cut

I tend to work with one hand on the keyboard and one on the mouse, and these would surely help increase productivity.

Thanks for the support.

Hi, adding keyboard shortcuts is very easy (for us!). If you have specific thoughts about what keys should be used I can certainly get that implemented quickly. Longer term we could make this a user customisation, but that wouldn't be given a very high priority at the moment.

Hey Guys,

Love the new version and Happy Birthday.

One feature request I would like to request is more keyboard short cuts. I have been using drawing software for many years and I find the most effective are those with lots of keyboard shortcuts. If you are concentrating on tweaking something, its a pain to have leave the scene with the mouse, go click on the new tool and the go back to continue tweaking.

I know you have some of the tools on the tool palette already with shortcuts, but others I use all the time, don't have a shortcut. Is there a way to define shortcuts for others, like freehand track or add/remove point.

Thanks, and keep up the good work!

Just to expand on the point Jill made about documents of different sizes. A layer doesn't have a size of its own, it is always the size of the drawing it belongs to. Therefore when it is moved (actually copied - the original layer stays where it is) to another document it adopts the size of the drawing there. That's all well and good when the documents have the same size, or when the destination document is bigger, but if the destination is smaller it is possible that copied objects could end up placed beyond the bottom or right edges. The current implementation of layer copying makes no attempt to deal with this or draw it to your attention. Objects that end up off the edge can't be selected with the mouse of course, though a "Select All" command will still select them, allowing them to be grouped and resized as Jill suggested to bring them back into the visible area.

Hello Volker,

With the release of Ortelius 1.1 a command has been added to select multiple labels at one time. On your layer of interest, select the features that are labeled (or simply Select All). You can now choose Edit > Labels & Text > Select All Labels and all labels will be selected for your selected features. Use the CMND-"+" or CMND-"–" to quickly increase or decrease font size, or use the Fonts Palette to further modify fonts.

Hello, With the release of Ortelius 1.1 styles and symbols are saved to the Library Manager as they are added via the Style Inspector and Create Symbol dialog. In the case of a crash, added styles will be retained.

Hi. With Ortelius 1.1 this functionality has been added. You can now drag a layer directly from one opened file to another. Click and hold the layer of interest and drag it into the layer list of the other document.

Note that if the drawings are of considerably different size you'll likely need to resize the items to fit. Select all items and group - hold the SHIFT key (to maintain aspect ratio) while resizing the bounding box of your group. Let us know how it works.

Hi Alexandra,
As Graham noted, tracing over an existing source map to get the information you need may be the way to go for your project. For a similar project, I found a couple different maps as sources - for example a simple screenshot of the area from a search engine map (like Google Maps) will give you present day view, then try to find some maps from the time period your ancestors were living there. You can put each source map on a layer, perhaps with a bit of transparency, and align them as best you can. Then use the images to trace the information you want on your own map. hiding the source maps when you are finished. You might find this post of interest - http://www.mapdiva.com/2010/01/mapping-family-history-with-ortelius/ and I recommend reviewing the exercises on how to use Ortelius' drawing tools. The article suggests some sources of historical maps - you probably have fun looking around at these older maps and they may even give you new insight as to what like was like during the time period. Hope this helps, Jill

A shapefile is not a map. Shapefiles contain data about the places they represent, but they are not images, so you would not typically find a shapefile with towns, cities and so on already labelled (in fact I don't think that's possible). The shapefile certainly could contain that information, but converting that data into a visual map is the job of the cartographer.

Ortelius imports shapefile data as a new layer in an existing document, so you first have to create a document. If "Import Shapefile" is greyed out it means you don't have a document ready to import into.

Shapes, points and line features in the shapefile are imported as shapes, symbol and line graphic vector objects. All other data such as city and county names are attributes attached to the appropriate objects and are visible in the 'Attributes' section of the Object Inspector. Elements you add such as labels can reference any of these attributes as you develop your map.

An alternative if your needs are simple is simply to find a suitable map image and overlay your own text and other features on top, but using images in this way is not really what Ortelius is designed for and won't give professional results without a great deal of attention to the quality and resolution of the map image (assuming the image remains visible in the finished document - it is common to use map images for tracing into vector form then remove or hide the image).

Hi, Administrator --

Thanks for the answer, but I still am stymied.

I did a Google search as you suggested, and found only one file that seemed to be free and a shapefile of both parts of Ireland, but none with the names of the citiies, towns, counties present on it. Do you have any suggestions about how better to create a search? [shapefile Ireland, shapefile Ireland cities, shapefile ireland towns] The latter turned up a map with names, but not a shapefile. Is it necessary to use a shapefile? Could I just use a map since all I wish to do is to enter a layer of names and dates in the appropriate areas?

I then opened Ortelius, but the Import Shapefile option is greyed out. I went to the manual and did a search for Import Shapefile -- and got no hits. So, I don't quite know what to do next if I find a shapefile or map I can use.

Lastly, since I am not familiar with the language of cartography -- not sure where in the manual to find instructions on how to limit / edit the map to include only the portion required.

Thank you for any additional guidance you can give.

I'm pleased to announce that Ortelius 1.1 is now available. This is a free update for all Ortelius users.

As well as the usual raft of bug fixes and other feature improvements, we have taken the opportunity to bring across the Library Manager from the Ortelius Pro development to the Ortelius Standard Edition. This provides professional-level cartography symbol and style management for all users. With the focus on streamlining your workflow, there is a completely new user interface for the Library Manager itself, as well as a rewritten Styles & Symbols palette. Creating, using and managing symbols is easier than ever, and it also allows us to deliver even more value-added content to you in the form of add-on collections of styles and symbols. You can try this out right away with the downloadable collection of Hills and Mountains: http://www.mapdiva.com/2010/07/hills-mountains-collection (requires Ortelius 1.1).

For existing users, updating to Ortelius 1.1 is simply a matter of having the update show up automatically if you have automatic updates enabled, or choosing Ortelius > Check For Update...

When you first run the new version, any existing custom styles and symbols you have created will be automatically converted to the new Library Manager format. Subsequently, Ortelius will launch much more quickly as the collections are not preloaded at start-up, and use far less memory. Release notes: http://www.mapdiva.com/products/ortelius/md_update_110.htm What's New: http://www.mapdiva.com/learn/whats-new/

Ortelius 1.1 is recommended for all users and supersedes all previous versions.

Hi Alexandra,

Googling for "shapefile" plus any specific terms such as the country or area of interest will usually turn up numerous copyright-free sources. You can import shapefiles into Ortelius to begin making a map. Shapefiles (extension .shp) are a de-facto standard for sharing geographical data on the net.

When shapefiles are imported into Ortelius, the objects they contain are converted to their nearest Ortelius equivalent and can be edited in exactly the same way as objects you've created yourself.

Hi -- I'm not a cartographer, but someone working on family genealogy and want to have a map of County Down and County Cavan (Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland) that shows the cities and towns in each.

Where can I find / purchase such maps?

How do I bring them into Ortelius so I can then attach labels of the individuals and where they lived?

Hi,

Yes, this is one of the many shortcomings of the existing Style management (new styles are only saved when the app quits normally). However, we are very close to releasing a major update that addresses this problem and many others. Look for a big announcement on this very soon.

Crashes in general are always a concern and we are constantly striving to eliminate them. The best way to help us is to submit a crash report WITH STEPS TO REPRODUCE. This need not be complicated - just tell us what you were doing when it crashed. Without that it's hard to know which of the million or so lines of code we should be looking at.

Creating new styles goes without any problem, but in case of system crash Ortelius, new created styles dissapeared without possibility of return ... there are not anywhere. Ortelius usually crash at the junction of two styles - roads when appears as a red circle - connector.

Currently tracks are disconnected from everything when they are grouped, which is a necessary requirement at the moment. That's why they don't look joined in the group - they're not. When ungrouped, they should reconnect to each other and other tracks in the layer but this was not being done quite correctly. I've implemented a fix for that which will be present in the forthcoming update.

Hi Gregory, This is the proper method for rotating multiple objects on a layer. Indeed there does appear to be a slight rendering bug with the track junctions. After cutting tracks at intersections if you group, rotate, then ungroup, the cuts/intersections should still be there. However, the appearance is altered with less smooth junctions as they had before grouping. From my testing, the rendering should restore properly after you save and close, then reopen the file - you may want to test it by saving a second version of your file. We'll put this on our list for further investigation.

Thanks, Jill

Hi!

If I've map a map using the cartography tools, it seems like the easiest way to rotate it is to select all the paths and convert them to a single object, which then gives me a handle for rotation. However, when I do this, I loose all the "cuts" I made (road intersections). So, is there a better way to rotate a layer?

I hope this question makes sense..

There are two approaches that can cut down the click time:

1. You can choose multiple tracks and apply the Edit > Paths & Tracks> Terminate Start / End styles all in one go. As Ortelius recognizes when there is a junction that over-rides the termination style, you can apply to all of your selected without worry for if a connection is at the beginning or end. This can really cut down on your clicks!

2. End termination styles are also accessible in the Object Inspector - Features pane. You can just keep this pane open when you are clicking from track to track to adjust the termination style setting. This is especially good when you have a lot that are different (e.g., some rounded ends, some barred, some open/none).

We've had an offline question other users may find useful so reposting here:

I find myself using the Edit --> path --> terminate start --> end quite a bit.

However, it is a lot of clicks. It there anyway to do this with a short cut?

Thanks!

Some other features for the Pro-Version , which may enrich the already greatly designed Map Design Software:

1) allow to create, place and manage links on maps e.g. to associated either URLs, other Ortelius maps, other documents or images, pop-up texts / notes, e-mail address e.t.c.. When exported to PDF, the links and pop-ups remain active

2) Allow the export of linked maps also to HTML to publish map selections on a file-/web- server (see point 1)

3) provide additional ready to use layers to your map templates with e.g. city- and town names, rivers
