777images on "Filling an Image from the Flags Clip Art"

I have been making some graphics using the maps of counties and the text name of the country and filling both the text and the country with the flag. I have not been able to get the flag from the styles and clip art to directly fill the image. I want both the text and the image to become one image, so I first group them. I outline the using the style inspector then I add the core image filter group and image adornment. I then have to get the image from my files by previously exporting the flag as a png file. The problem with this work around is that even though the image is grouped they are treated as individual imagesand they are not easily adjusted( ie: you can't move the image up or down or side to side. All you can do is increase or decrease the size of the image.

I tried a second work around and have a different problem. I tried putting the flag on a separate layer, adjusting the size and layout to fit what i wanted filled, copying the flag and pasting it on the other layer. I only got this to work one time, and that was by having the flag on the same layer. This worked but I had no way to adjust the image.

So far I have resorted to saving my outline image as a ping and going to photoshop to insert the flag image.

It would be helpful if there were
1) The ability to fill with clip art the same as from the image library.
2) The ability to adjust the fill up and down and side to side.

Maybe someone has a solution

Amen. I have several EPS files that I either purchased from Stock image sites or collected along the way. It is critical that I be able to use elements of the files in new creations. Right now I have to still use Intaglio to edit them but I so wanted to dump that program for Artboard but being able to edit industry standard formats is critical. I was soo ready to purchase but this is a deal breaker.

Illustrator & Photoshop are great but they have become behemoths that are too expensive for most of us. We are looking for smaller, cheaper programs and are thankful for the likes of Pixelmator. Please give us the ability to edit at least one industry standard format soon.

"Assuming Ortelius works like every other vector illustrator . . . might lead to frustration." - I'm guilty of this. Happy to now report that I've seen the light and appreciate how Ortelius design differences make cartography easier. Great software!

Just a follow-up . . . I actually didn't have a desktop printer attached to computer while drawing map . . . this would explain why I couldn't locate paper margins in "page set-up". Selecting under main menu "View -> Hide Paper Margins" was the ticket to clarify for me final map layout. Thanks again Graham.

Hi,

Yes, this can take a bit of understanding. First, Ortelius lets you define margins which have nothing whatever to do with printing, paper or anything else. Most maps have a content area containing the map itself, and margins which contain other information, such as the indexing for a grid, a key, title, that sort of thing. It is these margins that you are setting in the Drawing Setup dialog, and they can be sized however you wish (including setting to zero if you don't want them at all). These margins are inset from the canvas size, and the content area is defined by what's left, so if your canvas size is 20 inches x 20 inches, and you set a 1 inch margin on all sides, you end up with a content area of 18 x 18 inches.

The canvas represents your entire map, including its margin content. When this map is printed, this entire area must be printed as the content region of the paper, so any paper margins are additional to the canvas area and are outside of it. The paper margins are defined by the printing system, and will depend on the printer hardware and the user's paper choice and so forth. As with any app, these are defined and set up using the Paper Setup dialog.

If you have a specific final map size in mind, then there is no difficulty - you simply set your canvas to that size. It will be printed on as many sheets of paper as necessary to give you that size - and any additional margin for the chosen paper is taken into account.

The problem comes when you want to make a map to exactly fit the paper you have. In that case, the canvas size must be shrunk down a little to allow for the paper margins that the printing system will apply. By checking the "subtract paper margins" box, this shrinkage is performed automatically - whatever the current paper margin values are are subtracted from your canvas size to give an overall map size that will fit the chosen paper. You can reveal this subtracted area by checking the "Show Paper Margins" in the View menu. The paper margin values themselves are supplied by the printer driver for your printer hardware, and are tied up with the paper size you choose. You can set them manually using the "Manage Custom Sizes" sub-dialog of Page Setup, where a custom page size including margins can be entered.

In general, the use-case we assume is most likely for the professional is to be creating a map to a specified size, and that will be your canvas size. You can forget about paper margins, as you'll probably be printing ultimately to a large-format printer that will not split your map across sheets of paper.

For the casual user or for proof printing, using an inkjet or laser with a sheet feeder is much more likely. In that case, you only need to consider paper margins if your goal is to size your map to an exact number of physical sheets. In that case the "hardware" paper margins must be considered. An alternative to doing this, if your map is sized to a single sheet, is to simply scale the map to fit the paper at print time. Of course that typically involves a degree of scaling which would compromise the trueness of the grid measurements and so on.

So I hope that helps make it a bit clearer - certainly this is quite a complex subject to get your head around. In your case, think about how you want to print your final map. If it's going to be necessary to tile the map over multiple sheets, and your printer supports it, using totally borderless printing is easiest. In that case, the paper margins are zero, so there is no difference between the canvas size with or without paper margins. When you print, the map will be printed to the very edge of the paper, and taping them together or pasting them on a board to make the physical map requires no overlap.

Hello, seems like a silly question but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the relationship between canvas size, drawing size, paper and map margins within the File - Drawing Setup . . .

I noticed that when you input a custom size measurements for the canvas size, it's suggesting one should include paper margins. How does Ortelius know what "paper" margins I have added into my canvas size? From my limited perspective it seems that Ortelius automatically applies margins of it's own, e.g. 1/4" on left, top right size and over 1/2" for bottom paper margin - or is there another input feature that I need to designate what my paper margins are? For example, I would like to have all my paper margins set at 3/8 inches.

Hi Graham, thanks on a couple of fronts.

First, I didn't realize that graph paper and rulers are synchronized - I was turning off the graph paper feature for a custom map project that doesn't require the feature.

Second, I was opening a metric document template because it was the exact drawing size measurements required then converting from metric to the inches ruler - I belief this is the metric hangover you made reference to. Alternatively, when I open a document template in inches first, then resize drawing size, everything is fine ruler-wise.

Ortelius, great software - thanks!

Hi,

You can set the divisions however you want. I'm not sure why the default is 5 - I'll look into it, it may be just a hangover from the metric settings.

The Graph Paper grid and the rulers are synchronised, so once you have set your units to inches, click on the Graph Paper tab and set the number of divisions to 8 or 16 as you wish. The ruler will reflect these settings whether or not the Graph Paper itself is visible. Snapping to Graph Paper will then snap to the 1/8" or 1/16" divisions you set.

Note that depending on your settings, the divisions might not be shown depending on the zoom level. The rulers only draw marks when they can be drawn sufficiently far apart to avoid looking too cluttered. At 100% zoom, 8 or 10 divisions of an inch are displayed, but 16 would be too cluttered, so are not shown.

Ask your print shop if they can handle PDF. PDF was invented originally to solve the problem that EPS solved earlier - how to get exactly what you intended when printing. PDF has the advantage of embedding all necessary fonts, etc. I have not come across a print shop in 15 years that didn't prefer PDF for that reason.

I would be happy to share some of my map images if there is a place to send or upload them:

I have come up with a solution to using hachures per my posted question about a month ago. (I found, as you indicated, that at a point when using too many Ortelius hachures, my computer would almost grind to a halt as it recreated them every time I changed the zoom.)

I have also developed a fairly nice (could be a little sharper) way to use a topo map background in a situation where I really needed to analyze accurate terrain detail to write about an historic route into Arizona in 1860.

And, I have used many historic maps as a templates to redraw them to fit my writing needs, make them more publishable (legible in a book), and to help tell the story line (analysis of history) that I am creating (targeting completion by the end of 2012).

I can honestly say, that finding Ortelius was the moment that made all my book writing goals pop!

I have to agree with ohado, I've been looking for a drawing program to replace FreeHand for a while. I'm not a graphics designer, I pretty much only make maps. Illustrator is painful to work with after using Freehand for that purpose.

I've been looking at Ortelius for quite a while, but cannot justify a purchase. I use Freehand with an old version of MaPublisher. I've been waiting for the "Pro" version to be released. Being able to bring in editable PDF/EPS files would push me more into buying now rather than keep working with Freehand. I could modify my workflow regarding shapefile registration.

A: Yes, Artboard can open Ortelius files, though some cartographic objects are necessarily degraded. For example, Artboard does not support tracks and symbols, thus tracks are turned into paths (you loose automatic junctions) and symbols are turned into simple graphics (like detached symbols). Attribute information (if any) behind your graphics would be lost. Otherwise, all normal artwork would open properly.

Hi Pete,
You are correct, in that Artboard is in many ways a subset of Ortelius. Primarily, Artboard does not include all the cartography tools and drawing to scale that make Ortelius unique. Artboard has a simpler interface, a bit different workflow, and some features/enhancements not currently included in Ortelius. That said, we are working on a major update to Ortelius that will bring those enhancements more in line <img src="http://mapdiva.com/forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" /> . In terms of content, with Ortelius you get preloaded styles and map symbols (geared to cartography); Artboard has different preloaded clip art and styles (geared to graphic design). Different templates.

In short, there are slightly different advantages with each, but you have the same graphics drawing tools and Style Inspector elements in both. So if you have Ortelius – go for it!

Looking forward to seeing your work!

Regards, Jill

I am using Ortelius to create about 25 maps for a book I am writing. Now, I am starting to work on the cover graphic, which will be a stylized version of an historic drawing of the Southwest.

My first thought is that Ortelius is just a specialized version of Artboard, or Artboard led to Ortelius. So, I am thinking that I should be able to "draw & color" with Ortelius. Right? Or will Artboard give me some unique capabilities?

I beg to differ. I'm considering a purchase of Ortelius and the ability to import PDF/EPS files would be a winner. Illustrator is not a good tool for map drawing (to say the least), but we have lots of Illustrator maps (and lot and lots of Freehand maps). If only we could import them to Ortelius...

Hi,

No, it's not possible to edit the image. When you exported it as a JPEG, you created a bitmap image - that is, one consisting of nothing but pixels. All of the original information about the different objects that made up the image was lost at that point.

However, even exportng in some other format (e.g. PDF) will not help you in this case, because Ortelius currently is unable to import vector images in a way that allows you to edit the individual objects.

Ok so i am very new to this Ortelius software and i'm having a bit of a problem. I have done the tutorials so i know how to work with the templates etc.
I have imported an image via Image Browser (the image is of a map of my country which already have symbols etc.) I coverted the file from Illustrator file to jpeg file so it can upload to Ortelius.
Now, is it possible to somehow edit the contents that were already on the existing map? I have been able to add stuff (symbols, roads i missed before etc) OVER the existing map but i can't edit what is on the map already. Is it even possible? Can someone help me out please, would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. Ortelius does not support reprojection or georeferencing.

Ortelius Standard Edition places the Shapefile as a set of separate graphical vector objects. To move and re-size the map layer, group the objects first. Here is our Getting Started tutorial about working with shapefiles http://www.mapdiva.com/2009/09/import-shapefiles-2/

This is not the purpose of attributes. Attributes are "metadata" for an object on the map, they do not directly dictate the way the item is rendered or displayed.

Hi

How cannot set the rendering following the attributes in an item?

For example, in a way I can store a lot of attributes like a name and then set it as a name along the way.

But how with a color attribute for example, set it to be used as a color attribute for the way? Or any otehr attribute like width, etc.

Hi

I have another trouble here.
When I import these shapefiles, they are not set at the right position on the map.

Ortelius will draw the map following the first one imported and then adjust the size of the second one following the size of the map canvas.

The behavior is wrong. It should import one and then adjust again the canvas following the second one shapefile.

best regards.

Yes, when I go to Edit>add clip art to library I get another new Gregg's collection created. But when I try for the third time it does not create another (third) Gregg's collection.

Hmm, well, that shouldn't happen. But when comparing names it is case sensitive, so perhaps there were subtle differences? If you can show that it creates multiple collections with the same name, we'd consider that a bug and it will need to be investigated.

Thank you. I was wondering because I had one Gregg's collection and then it created another Gregg's collection. I'll try what you said and leave the second one.

Yes, it's supposed to happen.

New symbols need to be added to a writable collection, so if necessary one is created based on your user name. For example, If your user name is "John Smith", then the default collection is called "John's Collection". If you want it to become part of a different collection, you need to move it there afterwards. Since you can have any number of collections of your own creation, Artboard can't predict which one you intend as the ultimate destination. Earlier versions would actually use the first writable collection alphabetically, but that wasn't any smarter than always using the user name-based collection.

I suggest not deleting the collection every time, but leave it there, even if it's empty. It will provide a place that you know all new symbols will be added to initially, from where you can move them later. We could ask the user what collection they intend as the destination up front, but for simplicity's sake, we don't. It's more steps and more code to do that than to place them in a default collection and let the user move them afterwards.

Another solution could be to nominate a default collection, which we've considered, but it adds a bit of complexity that we don't think is really necessary.

Every time I add a new symbol to the Mapdiva Library Artboard wants to make a new collection to install the symbol into. I then have to move the symbol into my old collection and delete the new collection. Is this suppose to happen?
